Health Benefits of Nellikka (Goose Berry)

Nelli or Indian gooseberry  is a medicinal plant with lots of health benefits.  In sanskrit it is known as amalaki.  The botanical name of this plant is Phyllanthus emblicaNellikkai is the fruit of this plant. It is yellowish, white in colour when it is fresh and if dried it will be black then it is called ‘Nelli mulli’( Dry Goose berry with out seed). Fresh fruits have three tastes Sour, Astringent and Sweet.

By use of Gooseberry (Nellikkai) it cures Psychiatric ailmentsKapha problems, Sinusitis, Improves salivation, Vomiting, GiddinessConstipationDiabetes and Increase complexion. The root of this plant have an ability to cure vomiting, tastelessness, diseases due to the vitiation of 3 humors, constipation, and the bad effects caused due to improper pathiyam (Diet regimen).

Gooseberries (Nelliakkai) can be taken as Kalpa medicine as pickle, decoction, thenooral (Keeping inside honey for stipulated time) etc. It is said that doing this can keep ones young. Nellikkai is having Vitamin C in it. So it enhances the immunity.

Dry Goose berry with out seed (Nellimulli) can be pasted and applied on the fore head, which gives coolness to eyes, A decoction of nellimulli with added sugar and milk will cure Increased body heat, ulcers in male genitalia and vomiting.

Nellikkai is a major ingredient in siddha medicines like Nellikkai lehyam, Thriphala Churnam, Neerazhivu choornam, Thaleesaadi churnam, Panchakarpa Kuliyal Churnam, Aswagandha bala Lakshadi thylam, Chukku Thylam, Maha vallathi Lehyam etc
